Common subordinating conjunctions include: After Although As Before If Since Though Unless Until When Whereas While By definition, a clause that begins with one of these conjunctions (e.g., becauseà I overslept, à afterà the movie ended, whenà the teacher handed the test back) cannot stand alone as a sentenceââ¬âthat is, it is dependent. This apparent naturalness can, however, become a double-edged sword: because well-punctuated writing seemsà so easy and natural, it can inadvertently promote the misconception that writing well iseasy and natural. The problem, of course, is that while these rules are absorbed intuitively by some writersââ¬âa not insignificant number of whom are, not coincidentally, voracious readersââ¬âmany other people must be specifically taught them in order to be able to produce even minimally effective prose. If one falls prey to the illusion that good writing is effortless to produce, however, then discussions of subordinating conjunctions and dependent clauses might seem like a pointless technical distraction, one that serves only to make the composition process overly and unnecessarily complicated and artificial. (This is essentially the grammar equivalent of the phonics vs. whole language debate: if students are exposed to high quality writing, theyââ¬â¢ll absorb the rules of grammar naturally. To treat grammar as a series of discrete rules to be memorized, without any underlying logic, is to largely miss the point of the subject. To be sure, there are some aspects of English, primarily involving idioms, that evolved the way they evolved for no particular reason; however, grammatical rules are by and large conventions that eventually hardened into fixed practices because they facilitated communication in some way, e.g., by marking the logical separation of ideas within a sentence. In the 1900s was a time of new inventions to help. The United States of America did not have a reliable way to travel by car. In 1903 Henry Ford was the person to solve the problem for the United States of America (ââ¬Å"Ford Motor Companyâ⬠1). On June 16, 1903 Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company (ââ¬Å"Ford Motor Companyâ⬠1). The Ford Motor Company was based out of Detroit, Michigan (ââ¬Å"Ford Motor Companyâ⬠1). The underlying realitybetween the two societies is that the masses are manipulated,controlled, and brainwashed, without resistance, to obey andfollow their leaders through various methods of enforcement. The Brave New World is controlled by a select few who callthemselves Resident Controllers and Directors. These elite feware able to control the production and selection process ofsocieties masses. Mustapha Mond, Resident Controller for WesternEurope, and the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning, overseethe conditioning of embryos. Their powers and control over theseparticular jurisdictions gave them great power, and with that theability to manipulate others. If it was not the competitiveness between ruling church states,the eleventh commandment would have been abolished. Throughdictatorial control the repercussions of not being fruitful andmultiplying, or of using contraceptive devices were most severefor any man or women, and quite often lead to punishment andextermination. Coupled to the acts of punishment, often drugs andother brainwashing techniques were used on those who did not obeythe eleventh commandment. If itwere not for the techniques that the church used, their abilityto control the masses would have been greatly diminished. ConclusionThrough reinforcement of desirable behaviour and scientificmanipulation, the effectiveness of the Directors and ResidentControllers ability to control the masses was greater than thosemanipulation methods practiced by the church in The EleventhCommandment. While in both societies theunderlying human interaction was the inability to communicate,both had the essence of being superficial worlds.
